Some businesses don’t feel like they have the time or resources to train employees. Often the employees are thrown into the work situation without expectations.
Creating a plan, meeting with employees, and also explaining expectations can make a huge difference.
Zingerman’s uses four questions when creating a training plan:
- What is expected of the trainee
and by when? Document
expectations, set priorities,
establish time frames, and get buyin from staff. - How will the information be
made available? Some options
are classroom instruction, on-shift
training, and self study. - How will we know the
expectations are (or are not)
being met? Provide performance
tests, written tests, role-playing,
and observation and feedback. - What are the rewards/
consequences for meeting/not
meeting the expectations? You
can move on, do it again, provide
close supervision, offer raises or
promotion, or other post-orientation benefits.
Training is challenging, but important. Find more resources for creating a
