Why Business After Hours Mixers Remain Relevant

“It’s our human-to-human links that make the most meaningful moments of our lives,” suggests Joshua Cooper Ramo, author of The Seventh Sense and The Age of the Unthinkable.

While in many ways it seems we are more connected than ever, our busy schedules and screen time are keeping us from meeting face to face with businesses in our communities.  It is in meeting that we can most effectively collaborate, celebrate, and even commiserate.  But let’s get serious—who really wants to go to another meeting?

We are encouraged to “grow our network,” understanding there is a lot to be said for who you know when trying to get things done.

The chamber mixer model has long provided an efficient template for bringing people together, specifically within the business community. We believe there is great value in meeting, especially when it provides the chance to meet new people and businesses, or reacquaint ourselves with someone we haven’t talked to in a while.

So, what makes for the perfect chamber business after hours mixer?  The same thing that works for any great get together, an enthusiastic host and an invitation.  Still not convinced?  Check out Priya Parker’s The Art of Gathering. Parker offers a decoder ring for the secret forces at work when we gather for business, crises, or celebration.

And remember, “many of the best things in life happen when people gather,” said Chris Anderson, owner and curator of TED.

Intern Appreciation Luncheon August 2nd and Mixer July 11th

This August the Venango Area Chamber and FLEX (Future Leaders and Entrepreneurs Exchange) will hold the 3rd Annual Intern Appreciation Luncheon at Wanango Golf Club. Each summer many local businesses and organizations employ college interns from schools throughout the region and further. This relationship benefits our community in countless ways: employers typically reap the benefits of the best and brightest students, who bring energy and creativity along with emerging technical skills to their workplace, and the community has the great opportunity to engage and invite a future workforce.
The Venango Chamber is planning the Intern Appreciation Luncheon to show our appreciation for the choice these students have made in spending their summer with us!

This year, in addition to the appreciation luncheon, the VACC would like to extend a warm welcome to any interns in the area to the Business After Hours Mixer on July 11th at Hi-Level Golf Course. There will be a number of members of FLEX, the area young professionals group, in attendance to welcome the interns. Additionally, attendees can come early and play a round of golf with a cart for only $10!

We strongly encourage any area businesses who have interns or work-study students to send them to the appreciation luncheon and mixer! Below are links to more information about FLEX and flyers for both the luncheon and mixer. Hope to see you and your interns there!

OCHS Mixer – Into the Future!

OCASDThis evening members of the Venango Area Chamber had the opportunity to take a glimpse at just a few of the changes going on at the Oil City Area School District.  Anyone who gets close to the High School complex  will see the evidence of improvements in progress, which includes the nearly complete stage one of the new football field and track. Tennis Courts have been resurfaced, the new high school office is well underway and the addition of the second floor of the middle school has begun.

All of this is reason enough to be celebrated in the community but the real change is taking place inside the classrooms and extends , well, wherever the students go! Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, each student grades 9-12 were issued a laptop or notebook computer, as part of the new one to one initiative.

At this evenings mixer, teachers explained how they have changed the way they introduce curriculum. Science teacher Tim Spuck demonstrated the potential for creating “citizen scientists” and Spanish teacher Becky Leta shared her goal of creating a paperless learning environment. Scott O’Donnell, an English teacher, shared how creating an online school newsletter is providing students with a variety of learning experiences while merging academics and technology.

Of course change does not come easy. Teachers continue to receive training to implement these new technologies and patience is demanded of all, as the dust settles on building renovations.  All of this is great news for the business community of  Venango County as our students prepare to become our future workforce.  Our thanks goes out to Principal Scott Stahl and other staff that assisted with the mixer.
