When COVID Collides With the Flu

As we continue to make progress in the fight against COVID-19, those in the medical field are preparing for another virus that puts strain on the healthcare system—the seasonal flu, or influenza. There is an extremely important step you can take to protect yourself—getting a flu shot.

While the flu may seem less serious than COVID-19, anyone can develop complications. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation surrounding the flu vaccine. Please remember the following facts:

  • It is safe and effective, and recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older.
  • You need a flu shot every year, as the vaccine changes based on the most active flu strains each year.
  • You will not get the flu from getting the flu shot. Mild side effects may occur afterwards, which is actually your body’s way of building antibodies against the virus.
  • The flu vaccine not only protects you, it protects those most vulnerable to serious illness, like infants too young to get the vaccine and those with compromised immune systems.

Please help protect each other from the flu this year and schedule your appointment to get a flu shot today. Contact Primary Health Network in Oil City at (814) 670-7950.
