Are you dreaming of sunny beaches, bustling cityscapes, or exploring far-off lands? Before you pack your bags, Williams Travel Plus wants to remind you about a crucial deadline: May 7th, 2025. That’s the day the REAL ID Act goes into full effect for domestic air travel. After that date, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights within the United States. Don’t wait until the last minute!

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress after the 9/11 attacks to establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. A REAL ID-compliant license will have a star in the upper right corner. Primarily, a REAL ID is for domestic travel within the United States, and can also be used for entering federal facilities and military bases. It’s issued by your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and is less expensive than a passport.
A passport, on the other hand, is required for international travel and is accepted for domestic travel as an alternative to a REAL ID. It’s issued by the U.S. Department of State, valid for 10 years for adults (5 years for children under 16), and allows international travel. Both serve as valid forms of identification, require you to provide proof of identity and residency, and are accepted by TSA for boarding domestic flights.
If you only plan to travel within the United States, a REAL ID is sufficient. If you plan to travel internationally, you’ll need a passport, or if you already have a passport you do not need a Real ID to fly domestically.
