UPMC Hosted Forest Students for Medical Explorer Program

Before the end of the school year, ninth grade students from East and West Forest High School visited UPMC Northwest for a day of learning about various careers housed within the hospital, as part of UPMC’s Medical Explorer Program.

The program includes touring the facility and visiting stations set up on a four-minute rotation to learn about many different units within the hospital. Tammy Carr, Patient Experience Data Analyst at UPMC Northwest, said, “Representatives from various service lines including nursing, radiology, respiratory therapy and environmental services were on-hand to talk with students about all the different career opportunities available within the organization.” Students really enjoyed hands-on experiences like trying on a respiratory vest and tying on arm bands for phlebotomy.

These practical (and local) experiences are important for students in planning their career paths. We love to see opportunities like this that help our emerging workforce make informed decisions for their futures.
