Succession Planning: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Commitment

Change is never easy, particularly for a multi-generation family business where leadership, legacy, and relationships are deeply intertwined. In 2025, Hickman Lumber and Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring navigated an exceptionally challenging year marked by both profound personal loss and significant operational disruption.

The companies mourned the passing of two pivotal leaders whose influence shaped generations of success. Larry Hickman, second-generation leader, and Dennis “Denny” Hickman, third-generation president, each left enduring legacies rooted not only in facilities or production, but in integrity, long-term relationships, and a steadfast commitment to doing things the right way.

While Larry had formally retired years earlier and Denny remained actively involved in day-to-day leadership, both continued to serve as trusted mentors and guiding forces within the organizations. Their presence and values remain deeply woven into the culture of the companies today.

Adding to the challenges of the year, Hickman Lumber also navigated a devastating sawmill fire. The strength and adaptability of the team was evident, with employees across the organization stepping up to support one another, maintain continuity, and uphold the company’s longstanding commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Throughout this period, the companies have also been deeply encouraged by the unwavering support of their customers and industry partners. Tributes honoring Denny Hickman, including a custom wood engraving and the dedication of a National Wood Flooring Association Wood Floor of the Year award, reflect the respect he earned across the industry and underscore the strength of relationships built over generations.

With deep respect for the past and a clear focus on the future, leadership has formally transitioned to the next generation. Jake Hickman, with nearly 20 years of experience at Hickman Lumber, now serves as President of Hickman Lumber. Jessica Hickman Fresch, with nearly 15 years at Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring, serves as President of Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring. While this transition occurred under difficult circumstances, both companies remain firmly committed to the values, quality standards, and customer relationships established over decades.

Looking ahead, Hickman Lumber and Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring plan to continue expanding their teams. Future growth includes additional office and sales support, as well as rebuilding and strengthening a long-term sawmill workforce once reconstruction is complete, currently anticipated in spring 2026.

Grounded in a strong foundation, supported by a dedicated team, and guided by decades of experience, Hickman Lumber and Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring remain focused on delivering exceptional products and service, today and for generations to come.
