Succession planning is a hot topic in today’s fast-moving world. With leadership tenures shortening and generational change accelerating, organizations face increasing pressure to prepare for what comes next. Yet too often, leaders delay this work, whether due to time constraints, uncertainty, or the instinct to hold tightly to what they’ve built.

In reality, the greatest risk isn’t change, it’s a lack of preparation. Strong organizations recognize that leadership continuity is not about protecting the past, but about equipping others for the future.
At the Chamber, succession planning has been an ongoing priority. Years ago, we began documenting processes, sharing key relationships, and ensuring that critical information was accessible across the team. Each staff member was empowered with the understanding that they might one day step into greater responsibility.
Kat Thompson’s path reflects that intentional approach. She was first identified as a strong future leader while volunteering in Chamber programs. Even before joining the team, candid conversations helped confirm alignment around the Chamber’s mission and long-term vision. Over the past four and a half years, Kat has taken on a wide range of opportunities that not only strengthened the organization, but also affirmed her own aspiration to lead it.
Throughout that time, our work together became increasingly intentional. Through shadowing daily operations and engaging in strategic decision-making, Kat gained both practical knowledge and a deep understanding of the culture that drives our success. As she shares, having the time to learn both the details of the role and the rhythm of the organization has been critical, this combination, she believes, is what ensures a smooth transition.
In 2025, planning accelerated with the support of staff and the Board of Directors. A flexible timeline allowed us to prioritize critical functions first, then refine day-to-day operations. The result is a transition that has been thoughtful, steady, and well-coordinated.
Effective April 1, Kat will assume full responsibilities as President. She looks forward to celebrating the Chamber’s successes from a new vantage point, while also embracing the responsibility to lead staff and serve a diverse membership. Her leadership is already evident in the strong relationships she has built across the community.
Just as importantly, Kat is committed to continuing this cycle of preparation, keeping staff and board informed and ready for whatever comes next.
This transition reflects years of planning, collaboration, and shared vision. More than a change in leadership, it is a testament to the strength and sustainability of the Chamber, and a confident step into the future.
