Navigating Change: A New Chapter at the Barrow

Change is rarely easy. It can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, and sometimes even unpopular. But it is also a sign of growth, investment, and a commitment to the future. Few places embody that idea better this summer than the Barrow-Civic Theatre.

For more than 30 years, the Barrow has been a cornerstone of the community, bringing stories to life and creating memories for generations of audiences and performers. Today, the theater itself is navigating a season of change.

Earlier this year, Kristy Ference was appointed to the newly created role of Director of Operations at the Barrow-Civic Theatre, following years of close collaboration with longtime Executive Director Zachary Covington, who stepped aside after a decade of leadership. Her experience within the organization provides continuity, historical perspective, and a steady focus on its future.

That future is visible in more ways than one. The Barrow recently unveiled a new marquee, offering a brighter and more versatile way to communicate with the community. More than a sign, this multi-step project represents the theater’s continued investment in staying relevant and accessible while honoring its historic character.

At the same time, ongoing infrastructure improvements and construction have created challenges for businesses throughout downtown Franklin. Yet rather than step back, many have leaned into collaboration through cross-promotion, communication, and shared encouragement.

The theater itself is about change and transformation,” said Ference. “You start with an empty stage at the beginning of a production, and by the end it becomes something entirely different. Organizations work the same way. Change is necessary, and if you can make it through the growing pains, what comes next is often the most exciting part.”

Ference notes that navigating change requires patience, honest communication, and a willingness to focus on progress rather than discouragement. “It’s easy to get stuck on negativity,” she said. “But you have to stay focused on why you’re doing the work and keep your attention on what comes next.”

And while the team at the Barrow continues to refine the new technology and opportunities that come with the marquee, they are already looking ahead. The organization is currently celebrating its 33rd season through the “33 for 33” campaign, honoring decades of memories while investing in the stories yet to come.

Like many of the changes unfolding in our community, this is a reminder that progress is rarely a straight line. Sometimes it comes with detours, dust, and uncertainty. But with patience, perseverance, and a shared commitment to community, change becomes something more.

It becomes a sign that the story is still being written.
